Christmas Ornament Mousse Balls

Christmas Ornament Mousse Balls are a festive, creamy dessert blending airy mousse with bright holiday colors, perfect for entertaining or seasonal indulgence. These bite-sized treats are easy to make, visually stunning, and offer customizable flavors like peppermint, chocolate, and eggnog with a light, melt-in-your-mouth texture.

Ingredients

Main Ingredients

  • Heavy cream: 2 cups, whipped to soft peaks
  • Semi-sweet chocolate or white chocolate: 6 oz, melted and slightly cooled
  • Gelatin sheets (2 sheets) or powdered gelatin (1 tbsp)
  • Granulated sugar: 1/4 cup
  • Vanilla extract or peppermint extract: 1 tsp
  • Food coloring (red, green, gold): as desired for festive hues

Optional Garnishes

  • Crushed candy canes or edible glitter: 2 tbsp

Instructions

  1. Prepare the gelatin: Soak gelatin sheets in cold water for 5 minutes or sprinkle powdered gelatin over a small bowl of cold water to bloom. This ensures your mousse sets perfectly.
  2. Melt the chocolate: Gently melt the chocolate over a double boiler or microwave in short bursts, stirring frequently to prevent burning. Set aside to cool slightly.
  3. Whip the heavy cream: In a chilled bowl, whip the heavy cream until soft peaks form using an electric mixer.
  4. Combine gelatin with chocolate: Warm the bloomed gelatin gently until dissolved, then mix quickly into the melted chocolate to avoid lumps.
  5. Fold everything together: Gently fold the whipped cream into the chocolate-gelatin mixture, retaining as much air as possible. Add your choice of extract and food coloring for festive flavor and color.
  6. Shape and chill the mousse balls: Use a small spoon or melon baller to scoop mousse portions, roll between palms to form smooth balls, place on a lined tray, and refrigerate for 3-4 hours until firm.

Notes

  • Use chilled equipment for whipping cream to achieve better volume.
  • Fold whipped cream gently to maintain light texture.
  • Follow gelatin package instructions to avoid over- or under-setting.
  • Add food coloring just before shaping to keep vibrant hues fresh.
  • Shape mousse balls promptly after mixing in gelatin to prevent premature setting.
