Ingredients

Scale

Protein and Vegetables

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 8 oz fresh mushrooms, sliced
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

Other Ingredients

  • 1 cup shredded cheese (mozzarella, cheddar, or pepper jack)
  • 1 cup tomato sauce or 1 can (14.5 oz) diced tomatoes
  • Salt, to taste
  • Black pepper, to taste
  • 1 tsp Italian seasoning

Optional

  • Cooked pasta or rice, about 2 cups
  • Additional veggies like bell peppers, spinach, or zucchini (1 cup chopped)
  • Crushed red pepper flakes or hot sauce, to taste
  • Fresh herbs such as basil, thyme, or rosemary, for garnish

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Ingredients: Finely chop the onion and slice the mushrooms. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) so it’s ready when the assembly is done.
  2. Cook the Ground Beef and Veggies: In a large skillet over medium heat, brown the ground beef until fully cooked. Drain any excess fat. Add the onions and mushrooms and sauté until onions are translucent and mushrooms are tender, about 5-7 minutes. Stir in minced garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant.
  3. Combine Ingredients and Season: Add tomato sauce or diced tomatoes to the skillet. Season with salt, pepper, and Italian seasoning. Mix well and let simmer for a few minutes to meld the flavors.
  4. Assemble the Bake: Transfer the beef and mushroom mixture to a baking dish. If desired, layer cooked pasta or rice at the bottom before adding the meat mixture for a more filling casserole. Sprinkle a generous layer of shredded cheese on top.
  5. Bake Until Bubbling: Place the dish in the oven and bake for 15 to 20 minutes, or until the cheese is melted, bubbly, and has golden edges. Let cool for a few minutes before serving.

Notes

  • Use fresh mushrooms for the best texture and flavor.
  • Drain excess beef fat to prevent a greasy bake.
  • Choose cheeses that melt well such as mozzarella or Monterey Jack.
  • If using pasta or rice, pre-cook to al dente to avoid mushiness.
  • Allow the bake to rest 5 minutes after baking for easier serving.
