Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 1 can (14-15 oz) salmon, drained and flaked (or equivalent fresh salmon, cooked and flaked)
  • 1/2 to 3/4 cup bread crumbs (use gluten-free if desired)
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 large eggs, beaten
  • 2 tablespoons mayonnaise or Greek yogurt
  • 2 tablespoons fresh parsley or dill, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice (freshly squeezed)
  • Salt, to taste
  • Black pepper, to taste
  • Additional seasonings as preferred (e.g., cayenne pepper, garlic powder)
  • Olive oil or butter for frying

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Salmon: If using canned salmon, drain excess liquid and remove any large bones or skin for a smoother texture. For fresh salmon, poach or steam until cooked through, then flake finely with a fork.
  2. Mix Ingredients: In a large bowl, combine flaked salmon, bread crumbs, finely chopped onion, herbs, and seasonings. Add beaten eggs, mayonnaise or Greek yogurt, and lemon juice. Mix gently but thoroughly until evenly combined.
  3. Form Patties: Shape the mixture into firm patties about 3 to 4 inches in diameter. Gently compress with hands so they hold together well without being too dense.
  4. Heat the Pan: Warm olive oil or butter in a non-stick skillet over medium heat until the oil shimmers but does not smoke.
  5. Cook the Patties: Place patties carefully in the hot pan. Cook about 4-5 minutes per side until golden brown and crispy. Avoid moving too much to maintain shape.
  6. Drain and Serve: Transfer cooked patties to a paper towel-lined plate to absorb excess oil. Serve warm with garnishes or sauces of choice.

Notes

  • Don’t overmix the ingredients to avoid tough patties.
  • Test cook a small patty first to adjust seasoning and texture.
  • Chill patties for 15-20 minutes before cooking to help them hold shape.
  • Use medium heat to ensure even cooking without burning.
  • Add extra mayonnaise or lemon juice if the mixture feels too dry.
