Mississippi Mud Pie

Mississippi Mud Pie is a decadent, rich chocolate dessert featuring a crumbly chocolate cookie crust, a luscious fudgy chocolate filling, and optional toppings like whipped cream, marshmallows, or nuts. This comforting pie blends smooth, gooey textures with crunchy elements, making it the perfect indulgence for chocolate lovers and an impressive treat for any occasion.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Crust

  • 1 ½ cups chocolate cookies or graham cracker crumbs
  • 6 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted

For the Filling

  • 1 ½ cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1 cup evaporated milk or heavy cream
  • ¾ cup granulated sugar
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Optional Toppings

  • ½ cup chopped nuts (walnuts or pecans)
  • 1 cup whipped cream or marshmallows
  • Fresh raspberries or strawberries (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Crust: Begin by crushing the chocolate cookies or graham crackers into fine crumbs. In a mixing bowl, combine the crumbs with the melted butter until evenly blended. Press this mixture firmly into the bottom and up the sides of a pie dish. Chill in the refrigerator for 15 minutes, then bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for 8-10 minutes to form a crisp base. Remove and allow to cool slightly.
  2. Make the Chocolate Filling: In a saucepan over low heat, melt the semi-sweet chocolate chips together with the evaporated milk or heavy cream, stirring constantly until smooth and fully combined. Remove the saucepan from heat and whisk in the granulated sugar, eggs, and vanilla extract until the mixture is well incorporated and silky.
  3. Bake the Pie: Pour the chocolate filling into the prepared crust. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 25-30 minutes until the pie is mostly set but still slightly jiggly in the center. This ensures a fudgy, creamy texture rather than a cakey one. Remove from the oven and let cool to room temperature.
  4. Add Toppings and Chill: Once cooled, top the pie with whipped cream, marshmallows, chopped nuts, or any preferred toppings. Refrigerate the pie for at least 2 hours to allow the filling to firm up and the flavors to meld, making it easier to slice and serve.

Notes

  • Use high-quality semi-sweet chocolate for the best flavor.
  • Do not overbake; the center should remain slightly jiggly for a fudgy texture.
  • Bring eggs and cream to room temperature before mixing for a smoother filling.
  • Chill the pie thoroughly to set the filling properly.
  • To add extra crunch, fold nuts into the filling or sprinkle on top as a garnish.
