Ingredients

Scale

Beef Patties & Seasonings

  • 1 lb ground beef (80/20 lean-to-fat ratio)
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 1/4 tsp smoked paprika

Onions

  • 2 medium yellow onions, thinly sliced
  • 1 tbsp butter (for caramelizing)
  • Pinch of salt (for caramelizing)

Bread & Toasting

  • 8 slices garlic herb bread
  • Butter (for toasting, about 2 tbsp)

Cheese

  • 8 slices Swiss cheese

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Caramelized Onions: Slice the yellow onions thinly. In a skillet over low heat, melt 1 tablespoon of butter and add the onions along with a pinch of salt. Cook slowly, stirring occasionally, until the onions become soft, golden brown, and sweetly aromatic, about 20 minutes.
  2. Form and Season Beef Patties: In a bowl, combine the ground beef with salt, black pepper, and smoked paprika. Mix gently and shape the mixture into thin, flat patties roughly the size of your bread slices.
  3. Toast the Garlic Herb Bread: Butter one side of each bread slice generously. Place the bread butter-side down on a hot skillet with the garlic herb side down and toast until golden brown and crispy, about 2-3 minutes. Remove and set aside.
  4. Cook the Beef Patties: Using the same skillet, cook the patties over medium-high heat for 3-4 minutes per side, until they are nicely seared and cooked through.
  5. Build and Melt: On the toasted side of one bread slice, place a cooked beef patty. Layer caramelized onions and a slice of Swiss cheese on top. Cover with another slice of toasted bread, garlic herb side out. Press lightly and cook the assembled sandwich on the skillet over low heat with a lid on until the cheese melts and sandwich is heated through, about 3-5 minutes per side.

Notes

  • Use high heat for searing the patties to lock in juices and create a flavorful crust.
  • Low and slow caramelizing of onions brings out natural sweetness and enhances sandwich flavor.
  • Don’t skimp on butter for toasting the bread—it’s essential for perfect flavor and crunch.
  • Thin patties melt cheese faster and fit better in the sandwich.
  • Cover the pan while melting cheese to trap heat and speed up melting without burning the bread.
