Roasted Figs

Roasted Figs

Roasted Figs is a simple and delicious recipe that transforms fresh figs into tender, caramelized morsels bursting with natural sweetness and flavor. Perfect as a healthy snack, an elegant dessert topping, or a savory addition to cheese boards and salads, this quick bake enhances the figs’ honey-like taste with minimal ingredients and effortless preparation.

Ingredients

Fresh Figs and Seasonings

  • Fresh ripe but firm figs (quantity as desired, typically 8-12 figs)
  • Pinch of sea salt
  • Fresh thyme or rosemary (optional, a few sprigs)

Syrups and Oils

  • Honey or maple syrup, about 2 tablespoons
  • Olive oil, about 1 tablespoon drizzle

Instructions

  1. Preheat the Oven: Set your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper or lightly grease it to prevent sticking. This temperature caramelizes the figs quickly without drying them.
  2. Prepare the Figs: Wash the figs gently under cool water and pat dry thoroughly with a clean towel. Slice each fig in half lengthwise to expose the interior for flavor absorption.
  3. Arrange and Season: Place the fig halves cut-side up on the prepared baking sheet. Drizzle each with honey or maple syrup and olive oil. Sprinkle with a pinch of sea salt and add fresh thyme or rosemary sprigs if using.
  4. Roast Until Tender: Roast in the oven for 12 to 15 minutes until the figs are bubbling, soft, and slightly caramelized on top. Monitor to avoid burning, especially if the figs are very ripe.
  5. Cool and Serve: Remove from the oven and let cool for a few minutes. The figs will thicken slightly as they cool, delivering a perfect balance of sweet and savory with every bite.

Notes

  • Choose ripe but slightly firm figs for best roasting results without mushiness.
  • Use honey sparingly to prevent burning during roasting.
  • Line the baking sheet with parchment or silicone mats for easy cleanup and to prevent sticking.
  • Give fig halves enough space on the baking sheet for even heat circulation.
  • Experiment with fresh herbs like thyme, rosemary, or mint for additional aroma and complexity.
